5 Habits of Happy People

by dena on November 11, 2013

We often think happiness eludes us, or we believe we need a certain string of events to occur to be happy. The fact is anyone can experience happiness. Being happy is a choice and is influenced by how you approach events and circumstances you may find to be undesirable.

Are you ready to make a change? Here are five habits of happy people that you can apply to yourself.

5. They embrace optimism and positive thinking.

“Being miserable is a habit; being happy is a habit; and the choice is yours.” ~ Tom Hopkins

If you’re constantly looking at the world in a poor light you’re going to be affected. Happy people approach the day in a “glass half full” kind of mind. They choose to find the positive, and prefer being optimistic over pessimistic.

4. They do not allow negativity to affect them.

“The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude.” ~ Oprah Winfrey

When things are going sour around you, you have the ability to choose how you react. In order to be happy you need to stop allowing the negativity to influence how you feel.

Happy people choose to acknowledge the negative environment, action, thought, emotion, etc. but will not allow it to affect them. You must do the same. Therefore, when you find yourself surrounded by negativity, acknowledge it and release it.

3. They take care of themselves (mind, body, and soul).

“Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself: I, not events, to have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be.”  ~ Groucho Marx

It can be difficult to find the positive side of things if you happen to have a chronic illness. Here is a possible approach toward shifting how you feel. You might make a commitment to improve yourself – mind, body, and soul. Make an effort to eat healthier, challenge yourself with exercise, embrace your spirituality, clear your mind with meditation, etc. When your mind, body, and soul are all in harmony you’ll be in a better position to embrace happiness.

2. They choose to be around other happy people.

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. So choose wisely.”~ Jim Rohn

As the quote goes, you become like the five people you spend the most time with. If you’re choosing to spend that time with negative people, eventually their negativity will rub off on you. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, unsatisfied, and hopeless it may be time to take a look at those you are spending the most time with. Are those around you continuously complaining about their everyday life, whining about their bad luck? Take back your happiness and instead choose to surround yourself around other happy people. Remember: You can only change yourself, not others.

1. They choose to be happy.

“The world always looks brighter from behind a smile” ~ Unknown

The number one trait of happy people? They choose to be happy. They make the effort day in and day out to find happiness. They smile big and laugh often. They look at the world and see beauty.

If you’re ready to find your own happiness, make the commitment and start today!
